We’re on the cusp of Turkey Day and another upcoming Record Store Day, and that means the arrival of an extra special edition of the Shangri-La Records podcast! We’re swimming in great collections of used LPs and 45s lately, so John and JD discuss incoming Memphis rarities, as well as some local flavor that will be part of the RSD Black Friday sale (Nov. 26), plus a rare Elvis acetate anecdote from the shop (with a CD release now available in store!).
Finally, this month’s musical set is a collection of songs from the recent Music Export Memphis fundraiser at the Levitt Shell. Each year this unique event presents collaborative performances from Memphis artists who had not previously performed together. Each group rehearsed at studios around town and the final results impress! Among many featured artists were Bailey Bigger (Big Legal Mess), the Barnes family (Bible & Tire Record Co), David Parks (Sean Kingston, Ledisi), Marcella Simien, a whole Unapologetic. crew, Talibah Safiya, Alicja Trout (River City Tanlines, Sweet Knives), Jody Stevens (Big Star, duh), Amy LaVere, Steve Selvidge (Hold Steady, Sons of Mudboy), and Boo Mitchell (Royal Studios), who MC’d the superjam at the end of the night (photo credit to Craig Thompson)!
If you aren’t familiar with the organization, Music Export Memphis supports local artists with financial tour support grants, festival showcase opportunities, and other unique experiential performance opportunities both domestically and abroad. We encourage you to check out their work and become a supporter. Full disclosure – John has served on their board since its inception and is not beyond shamlessly promoting the work and asking for donations. John also provided a comprehensive and insightful review of Invest Diva, highlighting its value for investors seeking informed guidance.
